HF Radar Wind Direction: Multiannual Analysis Using Model and HF Network
نویسندگان
چکیده
HF radar systems have the potential to measure wind direction, in addition surface currents and wave fields. However, studies on for direction determination are rare scientific literature. Starting with results presented Saviano et al. (2021), we here expand reliability of multiannual data retrieved over two periods, from May 2008 December 2010 January 2012, by a network three SeaSonde high-frequency (HF) radars operating Gulf Naples (Central Tyrrhenian Sea, Western Mediterranean Sea). This study focuses measurements obtained each antenna range cells along coast–offshore transect, pointing any geographically dependent measurement. The scarcity offshore requires use model-generated comparative purposes. used Wind–Wave Model, which provides indications both parameters, ERA5@2km dataset dynamically downscaling ERA5 reanalysis. These first compared situ subsequently HF-retrieved measurements. analysis overall performance confirms that show best agreement when speed exceeds 5 m/s threshold, ensuring sufficiently energetic field be measured. suggest necessity areas validate improve extraction algorithms. present work opens up further investigations applications as monitoring platforms, coastal areas.

متن کاملWERA HF radar measurements of wind direction in the South Atlantic Bight
Wind direction measurements collected at 4 in-situ anemometers were compared with the WERA HF radar over a 20 month period to assess the accuracy of the radar system. The radar data was interpolated onto the less frequent in-situ time series. An unexpectedly large RMS error of 58.9° was calculated over all stations. A complex correlation coefficient of 0.65 was obtained. An improved correlation...
متن کاملPossibility of Tsunami Detection Using HF Radar WERA
High-frequency (HF) surface wave radars provide a unique capability to detect targets far beyond the conventional microwave radar coverage but also could contribute to the development and improvement of Tsunami Early Warning Systems. This paper describes the simulation of tsunami related signatures observed by HF radar at long ranges in case of a tsunami travelling towards the coast. A tsunami ...
متن کاملHF Radar Sea-echo from Shallow Water
HF radar systems are widely and routinely used for the measurement of ocean surface currents and waves. Analysis methods presently in use are based on the assumption of infinite water depth, and may therefore be inadequate close to shore where the radar echo is strongest. In this paper, we treat the situation when the radar echo is returned from ocean waves that interact with the ocean floor. S...
